Impact Stories

Adaptive toys for special needs children are challenging to find. This is for a variety of reasons such as availability, cost, and adaptability. This project helped families and students by providing free adaptive toys where they could choose a toy that meets their needs. It also provides students the opportunity to serve the community in which they live and develop engineering skills, collaboration, teamwork, creativity, compassion, and empathy. The purpose was to develop accessible design and play technology for members of our community at large. To create an adaptive toy “store” for families, free of charge, for birthday and holiday gifts. To develop an inclusive, sustainable, multidisciplinary group of students and staff.

To introduce students at Everett High and in our medical pathway program to the college program and career in accessible design and play technology that combines engineering and medical fields. We hope that we can help train the next generation of inclusively-minded engineers, clinicians, and educators to help make the world a more equitable place. It is a unique experience for students to learn how different fields intersect and can change the lives of people in their communities.

The library grant supported reading and learning across the curriculum to engage in critical thinking. From Equity and Inclusion books to social justice novels, books with Native American voices, girls in leadership roles, and audiobooks to allow access to all.

We wanted to foster conversations among our students about the importance of embracing and understanding the many cultures in each classroom. Having “People Colors” art supplies for students to choose from is a much-needed, affirming step forward to mirror our community. Our students become the faces and voices of acceptance and understanding.

This Grant provided the opportunity for a group of Latinx students to learn more about their heritage and the influence it has had on Washington state history. One 8th-grade Evergreen student wrote, “I liked the museum because I learned about how my culture has progressed through the years. I liked to see how people of different races came together for the same cause. For example, the Filipinos and Mexicans came together to fight for the rights of the farmworkers.

This Grant enabled us to purchase Filipino (plus Korean novels) with the help of students during Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month! Students were surprised and excited to see so many books written by and about Filipino culture, including novels, mango, and cookbooks. One student shared her Lola (grandma) holding one of the books. We also were able to purchase read-alikes for students who love LGBTQ+ books. Students continue to tell us to know that they appreciate being able to find books that reflect their cultures and interests as well as books reflecting cultures outside their own.

The purpose of this project was to have an amazing, interactive art show where ALL students can be proud to show what they have created. Regardless of attendance, academic or artistic ability, every student was included in the show to celebrate and reflect on how awesome they are. The grant supported a school-wide arts enrichment event. This event culminated with an entire year’s worth of work using Jefferson’s annual theme of “Grow & Glow.” Over the course of the school year, every student at Jefferson had multiple pieces of art, poetry, and photographs displayed at the event. The art classroom transformed into a glowing art gallery with two-dimensional artwork, tables were flocked with 3-dimensional pieces and there were Chihuly-Esque sculptures made from recycled materials hanging from the ceiling.

The goal of acquiring these model kits for students is to help them see and manipulate chemistry at the submicroscopic level; how atoms bond to one another, what shapes they create, and how these factors influence the substance at the macro-level. The purpose of this project will be to provide state-of-the-art, accurate, reusable, and sustainable model kits for generations of Seagull Chemistry students and help students ‘see’ how the behavior and properties of materials at this level contribute to the overall qualities of the substance at the macro-level. All chemistry classrooms at EHS have access to these kits to help students visualize the unseen world of chemistry.
